The police department has been made aware of a scam. This scam involves someone calling, impersonating an employee of the GW Medical Clinic. The scam works sort of like this: They will tell the patient they are eligible for a back brace through Medicare. They may tell the patient Medicare will cover 100% of the cost and then ask the patient for their Medicare (red white, and blue card) ID number.
Both Cobb Pharmacy and the GW Medical Clinic have both stated this is a fraudulent attempt to gain personal information. They will attempt to gain your trust and then will attempt to gain your personal information to further commit identity related fraud and theft. Both businesses stated they do not participate in this type of practice (asking for your Medicare info to bill for equipment).
These criminals are using local businesses attempting to sound legitimate so they are doing their homework. Please do yours before giving any personal identifiable information on the phone!
Thank you, Cobb Pharmacy, for providing police with this information. Communication between police, citizens, and businesses are crucial to being successful in combating fraud and any other type of crime.
